The genre
Every trophy, beside a lemon.
In Haarlem and Amsterdam in the 1600s, Pieter Claesz and Willem Kalf painted the expensive things of their day, a silver cup, a Chinese bowl, a peeled lemon, and set a pocket watch or a guttered candle among them. The pictures sold to the people who owned the cups. Everyone understood the joke, and they hung it in the dining room.
Vanitas paints the cups of now. Every maker on the table is invented, from Maison Néant, the house of nothing, to Cire Perdue, lost wax, because the objects are real and the brands would be someone else’s. About the house.
